“ The B-Side”: A fascinating portrait of a portraitist: Elsa Dorfman, a photographer whose large-format Polaroids are masterworks of technique and sensibility, shares her life story and her fund of wisdom with the documentary filmmaker Errol Morris. What to stream during the quarantine: the best movies on Amazon Prime. “ Atlantics”: The confluence of genres and ideas in Mati Diop’s first feature-a tale of labor relations and their political implications, a yearning romance, a drama of migration, a ghost story-is matched by her deeply textured and richly imaginative style. “ American Factory”: One of the rare recent cases where the Oscars did well: this documentary, by Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, is both a telescope and a microscope, uniting the local impact of globalized businesses and the international reach of local institutions and customs. Here are forty of them, in alphabetical order: A surprising number of the movies that I’ve most esteemed in recent years-and even a handful of venerable classics-are available to stream on it right now. Nonetheless, just as mud is a good place to find gold nuggets, Netflix, with some careful sifting, is a good place to find great movies, and a viewer with no other platforms at hand could keep busy and happy there for quite a while. Most of the best movies I’ve found there were released in the past ten years, even the past five, a bias that reinforces the fetishism of current techniques, moods, references, and idioms. It’s not, or Mubi, or even Amazon its selection of recent international and independent films is slender. Netflix is hardly the Criterion Channel-it doesn’t offer many classics, whether international or Hollywoodian.

Ok, I'm gonna say something that's gonna get me ripped appart.Īttachment to a character means nothing if you know it is difficult to lose it. But if you’re going into deadly fights against high level casters, you should fully expect spells like this to be in their arsenal. If the issue is spellcasters pulling out Flesh To Stone without warning, then it might be a problem with the way the DM is introducing this stuff. It’s difficult to maintain any amount of tension if permanent consequences aren’t on the line. Lethal threats aren’t necessarily restricted to “meat grinders”. It can be more dramatic as a plot device when you can more easily cure it than death. It worked pretty well, I think that Petrification is just about as lethal as a normal death, if not less so. That player was able to make a new party member in the mean time, and eventually they saved the old PC. They were 3rd level, and it took them a bit before they could have access to a Greater Restoration (They either got a scroll or hired a cleric, can’t remember). In an old campaign my party went against a Medusa (It was lowered in power, but still quite a challenge to beat). I can't imagine that nobody has pitted their players against a medusa before. So I'm just stuck wondering, is this just a plain bad condition to use against PCs in particular? Does anyone else have experience with this kind of thing? I really need to figure this out so I can know whether or not to consider it for my own bosses. It's such a strong status that it was basically the only reason we even debatably lost that battle. And yet, if they didn't have that spell, I would have been able to either wipe the floor with them or succeed in getting away. The only time it's ever worked out (kind of) is when I was playing a barbarian and failed the flesh to stone saves against the BBEG and got captured, and that's only because I was able to make the best of a bad situation and come up with a cool and fitting monologue. Seen about 3 PCs in my time playing get petrified, and every time it was at a really bad time where they couldn't like, make a dramatic stand without it being super awkward and sudden. I've rarely ever seen it played out dramatically, either. It's just a really anticlimactic way to go out. Like yeah, you can get it cured, but the nature of the effect is that it just completely pulls you out of the character until that happens, or you die. Especially if I didn't have proper warning beforehand that the enemy spellcaster has that spell. If that ever happened when I got hit with Flesh to Stone, I'd be pretty pissed about it. I mean, I've played barbarians with +10 to con saves who failed several con saves in a row. But I think personally that the use of it in any other context is slightly overkill. I mean, in a meat grinder campaign where everyone expects lethality, sure, it can be useful as a way to make a threatening boss such as a medusa. And with how much luck plays a factor in whether or not it does, it seems a bit unfair to use it against a PC when it easily is one of the most impactful and scary conditions. In a campaign where the players are generally attached to their characters, where it's more RP focused, is it simply unfun to use Petrification? It's, for all intents and purposes, generally a permanent effect if it goes through. I've been wondering about this for a while. Combat areas for every conceivable encounter. If you’re bored with a regular 6-string, pick up a 12-string and a world of different sounds will open up to you. I’ve helped students tune them, and I’ve played them in music stores and at jam sessions with friends. Once you master the tuning, the instrument comes alive with wonderful tones which sound vastly different from a regular 6-string. The 12-string takes a bit of getting used to, as the extra strings can be tricky to tune at times. This is an instrument that beginners through to advanced players will love to play. I’ve always enjoyed the full tone of the 12-string with its distinct sound. I’ve played acoustic guitars including 12-strings for several decades. My Experience with 12-String Acoustic Guitars Some models also feature deep cutaway bodies for easy soloing and higher fret access. These guitars are dreadnought-style instruments and many of them now come with electronic systems, so they’re ready for an amplifier. The 12-string sound is distinct and perfect for blues, rock, and other styles. These additional strings make the guitar a bit harder to play, but it’s make up for by the sounds produced by the instrument. The tuning is the same, but you have a doubled sound that’s richer and more vibrant than the single-string tone of a regular acoustic guitar. The additional strings produce a nice droning effect. The second string in each pair is thinner than the original string. You get two E strings, two A strings, and so on. A 12-string guitar is a normal acoustic guitar except that each string has been doubled. |
